ANDROGRAPHIS: THE KING OF BITTERS

Bitters are what ancient civilizations called medicinal solutions made from infused herbs. Andrographis paniculata is a plant native to southern India and Sri Lanka and is one such solution. Its leaves and stems have been used as a medicinal herb for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. Historically, the herb has been used to treat the common cold, flu, lung infections, as well as a variety of infectious diseases.

Given its extraordinary properties, ancient civilizations have crowned this particular one as The King of Bitters.Traditionally, it has been used to treat everything from ear infections to sore throats, from dysentery to leprosy. It has even replaced quinine as a treatment for malaria. In recent years, Japanese researchers have reported that the plant is effective in preventing the multiplication of cancer cells.

Andrographolides in the plant are thought to enhance immune system function by aiding in the production of white blood cells and promoting healthy activity of the lymphatic system. It has also been shown to protect the liver and help in treating conditions like viral hepatitis, jaundice, and drug-induced liver damage.

While very few side effects have been been reported regarding its use, there are certain pre-existing conditions with which you should be cautious before using this herb, such as gallbladder disease, as well as, certain heart or kidney conditions.
