Is "Healthcare" a misnomer?
I like to nerd out on etymology sometimes. Anyone else? It’s fascinating for me to learn about where our language came from and how words evolved over time. One word has interested me over the years more than others, because I’ve seen its meaning seem to change in my lifetime alone. It’s the word health. I think what affected its usage the most was using it in the compound word “healthcare”. I’m not sure that common word in our modern lexicon makes much sense given its history.
Our word “health” derives from the Old English word “hal” meaning “to make whole.” It was also used for the word integrity, which essentially means undivided, and to integrate something means to combine different things into a whole. Interestingly enough, “hal” is also the etymological word for “holy.” This makes sense to me. Someone who is deemed holy has likely integrated the different facets of their being (body, mind, heart and spirit) in their whole nature. That also sounds like a description for someone who is healthy to me. Someone who is more aligned with themselves would express more vitally and experience more inner peace.
You can probably go even further back to the Greek word holos. This word meaning “whole” is where we got the English term holistic. I consider myself a holistic doctor because I apply the theory of holism, which states that things cannot be broken down into their parts, but must be understood as a whole. While the benefits in medicine of a more mechanistic approach, where doctors or researchers aim to break things down into their individual parts, are undeniable when it comes to things like surgery and pharmaceuticals, I think perhaps they could fall under a more descriptive term than “healthcare.” Then again, the word medicine comes from the latin word “medicor”, meaning “to cure.” And the word cure comes for the latin word “curare”, meaning to “take care of.” Hmm...this is more complicated than I thought it’d be when I began writing.I’ve actually confused myself a little. So what do you think? Is the word “healthcare” used appropriately in our society? Should radiating a cancer patient or removing body parts or organs for the sake of keeping someone alive be considered healthcare? Should we refer to those situations as emergency care or something similar to that? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
